Out of my league
I sat and watched bake off this week and thought what the hell am I going to bake?? The technical challenge was just ridiculous, what even was that horn thing? I didn’t have quite the right equipment for the savarins however I thought I have nothing to lose so might as well give it a go.
I opted to make them in my cupcake tin and adapted one of Paul Hollywood’s recipes by using a blood orange gin liqueur, which I do plan to also drink!!
It didn’t start out very promising with the butter being too cold and not mixing how it should but I persisted until most of the lumps had smoothed out. I then also started to question how old my yeast was as I wasn’t seeing the best rise during proving. FYI, I have added yeast to the shopping list for next week. But by the second prove I could see a bit of rising which I prayed would work!
They turned a beautiful golden brown once baked, a slightly odd shape but I decided to just roll with it. I let them soak up the syrup for a good amount of time just to make sure they were boozy and moist! Lastly, I whipped up some creamed and piped it on, again not my best work but I didn’t really know how I wanted them to look.
The only way I can describe them is a cupcake like moist doughnut texture, slightly dense but the cream helps break that up. For something I had very low expectations of, and the fact I felt very out of my league baking from the semi final, I think it turned out to be a yummy Sunday treat 🤎
